USPTO Electronic Filing Presented from a Law Firm Perspective

In "The New Age of Electronic Patent Filing from A-Z: The Patent Side Goes Paperless," Leonard Richard Svensson (of Birch, Stewart, Kolasch & Birch, LLP) presents via PLI's Lawyer's Toolbox:
  • a listing of which documents you can and cannot file;
  • the new, expanded online filing hours,
  • the registration process,
  • a review of Birch, Stewart's in-house process for electronic filing in terms of record keeping
  • dangers and challenges of EFS, including quality control;
  • record maintenance;
  • keeping your docketing department in the loop;
  • cost and maintenance of scanning equipment;
  • reorganization of staff duties; and
  • the potential for examiners to not read important parts of the application and confusing the identity of documents because of improper scanning.
PLI also reccomends picking "a password you can remember, like Toolbox. It's simple, and no hacker would ever think to use it."
