WIPO to Offer Supplementary International Search Report
An optional, supplementary international patent search from a second international search authority will be introduced, and likely be approved, during the WIPO General Assembly meeting later this month, WIPO Deputy Director Francis Gurry reportedly told Liza Porteus of "Intellectual Property Watch:"
Gurry later told Intellectual Property Watch that, “because of the increasing linguistic diversity, it is increasingly difficult for a single office to cover all languages,” adding, “This supplemental international search would enable an applicant to request, in addition to the principal search, a supplementary search from another international authority.”
“I think it should be OK but I can’t say it’s done,” he said. He said he sees no major stumbling block to the proposal being approved later this month. If approved, it would go into effect on 1 January 2009.
