Paul Cole's "Fundamentals of Patent Drafting"

"Fundamentals of Patent Drafting" by Paul Cole brings together the papers of numerous patent attorneys that take account of the impact of many cases in the UK, Europe, and US. Each chapter begins with a short summary and list of skills to be developed by each chapter. While the collection is a bit disjointed for an easy read, it does provide an excellent starting point for compartive study of various patent issues on each side of the Atlantic.

"Fundamentals" is right. Paul Cole is a UK patent attorney who practises in the civil law system of the EPO (found of course also in Japan, China and throughout continental Europe) yet belongs to the English common law world. I like the way he uses landmark US, EPO and English precedents to reveal much common ground. As a UK patent attorney based in Munich, I happen to think that it is indeed British patent attorneys, with one foot in common law, and the other in civil law, who should be steering the world's patent law.
