U.S. Universities Receiving Most Patents in 2005
Source: USPTO press release on April 6, 2006
According to the Patent Prospector Blog, the pree release "failed to point out that these universities are what's been derisively termed 'patent trolls:' like spiders in their webs, patent holders that don't practice their own inventions, instead lying in wait to ensnare unsuspecting companies who infringe their patents. The University of California owns the notorious Eolas patent, which cost Microsoft over $1/2 billion in infringement damages; call it an educational endowment."
