Registration Grace Periods Driving Domain Name Speculation

According to a July 21, 2005 article by Kevin Murphy in Computer Business OnLine, the "Add Grace Period", during which new domain name registrations can be deleted for a full refund, is causing speculators to register hundreds of thousands of names for very short periods. "Names are being bought and then tested against traffic analyzers," said Verisign chief executive Stratton Sclavos. "The ones that can generate more than the $6 or $7 [registration] fee per year [in Google Adsense or Yahoo Overture text advertising links] are kept, the other ones are returned within the five day grace period."
