In an eWEEK.com special report, Senior Editor Steven J. Vaughan-Nichols writes opines that "Software patents are bad for both open- and closed-source developers, not to mention for anyone who buys software. Isn't it time we get rid of them once and for all?"
"I may not know the law," he writes, "but I do know a bad joke when I see one. The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has clearly gone too far in enabling companies to patent software—and for that matter, business ideas."
